Rivayete göre 6. yüzyılda günümüz İstanbul'unda "Porphyrios"(mor çocuk) lakaplı bir balina gemilere saldırıp ortalığı talan edermiş. Ne tarihi ne de arkeolojik olarak Marmara veya Karadenizde balinaların varlığına dair bir kanıt yok; efsanenin sadece bir hayal ürünü mü yoksa çok nadir bir biyolojik olayın hafızası olup olmadığı tartışma konusu.
Legends speak of a whale nicknamed "Porphyrios"(purple boy) haunting the ships of modern-day Istanbul in the 6th century. No records, historical or archaeological, support the existence of whales in the Marmara and Black seas. Whether this legend is the result of mass hysteria, or a truly rare biological phenomena, we may never know.
